Increased data collection transparency in Serbia

Serbian Prime Minister Aleksander Vucic has said that recent changes to the regulations on the Security and Information Agency (BIA) should provide more transparency about the process of collecting data, Serbian newswire B92 reported June 24.

“[It is important to note] that we increase transparency and that the data collection process is controlled so that institutions that serve to protect human rights are also satisfied,” Vucic said, as cited by the newswire. “In Serbia everyone thinks they’re being eavesdropped on and that they’re very important. I guess this is something that is usual among Serbs and has been going for centuries, even when eavesdropping devices did not exist.”

Vucic also stated that the amendments were adopted by the parliament on Wednesday June 24 following the request of the Serbian Constitutional Court of Serbia and the office of the citizens’ ombudsman, which both criticized the law on BIA in 2013. The Serbian Parliament adopted changes in several areas, including wiretapping, which according to the Serbian Constitutional Court, had not been in line with the Serbian Constitution.
