Slovenian former PM sentenced for corruption

Jenez Jansa will still stand in upcoming presidential elections.

Jenez Jansa will still stand in upcoming presidential elections.

The former prime minister of Slovenia, Janez Jansa, was jailed for corruption, the Russian independent media Radio Svoboda wrote, June 21.

“Janez Jansa, who in June 2013 was accused by the court for impacting on the results of a tender for the supply of Finnish armored vehicles for the Slovenian Army in 2006, began serving his two-year prison sentence,” according to the media. “The total value of the deal amounted to USD 280 million and Jansa allegedly received about USD 2.7 million.”

Despite the sentence, Jansa is still a candidate in the upcoming parliamentary elections for the center-right Slovenian Democratic Party. In case of victory, the highest court of the country may delay the punishment, the media wrote.

About three thousand supporters of the convicted politician gathered in front of the prison on June 20. Jansa thanked them for their support and encouraged to participate in the parliamentary elections on July 13.
