Russia offers Baltic states gas discount for NATO withdrawal

The Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaite said that Russia will offer Baltic states a discount on gas prices in exchange for their withdrawal from NATO, the Ukrainian business daily Biznes Vesti wrote June 23.

“We receive information that in other Baltic states, not only in Lithuania, as we are stronger in this aspect, there are negotiations with some politicians being held. They receive offers from the East, for instance, that if they leave NATO they will get cheaper oil and gas,” Grybauskaite said.

The Lithuanian president compared Vladimir Putin’s tactics to the actions of Soviet dictator Josef Stalin or Nazi leader Adolf Hitler.

Putin uses nationality as a cover for the conquest of territory by military means, according to Grybauskaite.

“Russia is trying to influence the post-Soviet territories and wants to make the Baltic states still dependent on it economically, politically and for energy,” the president said.

“The European Union should become economically independent from Russia and diversify the energy market, since it is ‘too risky’ to depend on the Russian energy.”
